How It Works

Official Closures

We automatically pull data from the States of Guernsey's official roadworks system. Official closures are shown as coloured lines on the road indicating the type of disruption. Click the legend button on the map to see what each line colour means.

User Reports

Anyone can report a road closure they encounter. User reports are shown as coloured dot markers on the map, with the colour indicating the type of incident. User reports are especially valuable for unexpected incidents like accidents, fallen trees, or flooding that aren't in the official system.

Community Voting

Users can vote on reported closures to help verify their accuracy:

  • Confirm - The closure is real and still active
  • Dispute - The report appears to be incorrect
  • Resolved - The road has reopened

Feedback on Official Data

Official closure data comes from the States of Guernsey, but sometimes it may not reflect real-world conditions. You can provide feedback on official closures too:

  • Confirm - The official closure information is accurate
  • Dispute - Report an issue with the official data (road is actually open, wrong dates, wrong location, etc.)
  • Resolved - The road has reopened ahead of schedule

When multiple users dispute an official closure, administrators are automatically notified to review and update the information.

Discussion

Each closure has a discussion section where logged-in users can share additional information, ask questions, or provide updates. This helps the community stay informed about changing conditions.

Bus Route Information

Official closures automatically display which bus routes are affected, helping commuters plan alternative travel arrangements. When 5 or more routes are impacted, a warning is shown to highlight significant disruption.

Time-Aware Display

roads.gg automatically tracks when closures are active based on their start and end times, showing you which closures are affecting roads right now.

  • Active closures - shown with full color and opacity (affecting roads now)
  • Finished closures - shown with gray color and reduced opacity (past their end time)
  • Upcoming closures - shown with light blue dashed lines (haven't started yet)

Each closure popup displays its current status ("Active Now", "Finished", or "Not Yet Active") with timing information like "Ended 2 hours ago" or "Starts in 3 hours". You can filter finished/upcoming closures using the map filters if you want to see only currently active closures.

Official closures marked as "Finished" by the States of Guernsey are completely removed from the map as they represent fully completed roadworks with no residual effects.

Trust Score System

Every user-reported closure has a trust score that indicates how reliable the report is likely to be. Higher scores mean more trustworthy reports.

How Trust Scores Work

Starting Score

Reports from logged-in users start at 5 points. Anonymous reports start at 1 point.

Vote Effects
  • Confirm vote: +1 point
  • Dispute vote: -1 point
  • Resolved vote: No change (but may resolve the closure)
Automatic Resolution

If a closure receives 3 or more "resolved" votes, it's automatically marked as resolved. If the trust score drops below 0, the report is hidden from the map.

Score Ranges
8+ Highly trusted - multiple confirmations
4-7 Trusted - verified by community
1-3 New report - not yet verified
Hidden - disputed by community

Map Legend

The map uses different visual indicators to show closure information at a glance. Click the Legend button on the map for a quick reference.

Official Road Line Types

Official closures from the States of Guernsey are shown as coloured lines on the affected roads:

Upcoming Works - scheduled future roadworks
Road Closure - road is fully closed
Diversion (All Vehicles) - alternative route for all traffic
Diversion (Cars Only) - alternative route for cars only
